There are many connections and contrasts between the factual biography of Marcus McCollum and his unique directorial style onscreen. His personal axiom, “it’s funny because it’s true,” is born from a childhood where Marcus needed to adapt and improvise to a variety of places and cultures - from elementary school in central Montana to high school in Nuremburg, Germany. A four-year stint in the Coast Guard on a polar icebreaker followed by college where he studied theatre, film and writing was all the preparation he needed to set out to Los Angeles on his self-proclaimed mission to “find the funny.”
It took only a brief internship at Ground Zero advertising before Marcus was asked to direct his first commercial for ESPN, which garnered awards at the One Show and AICP, along with a multitude of others.
Marcus spent the following seven years at Crossroads Films before moving to HELLO! He has crafted the comedy for clients across the board - from Toyota to Tampax, Hershey’s to Honda, Turbo Tax to Time Warner. He is known for his exacting standards in casting, his tireless work ethic to keep concepts simple and real, his rapport with actors and agencies, and his ability to motivate and communicate a vision to his methodically selected crew.
Whether it’s writing or developing stories for television and film or working in voice acting, Marcus enjoys dabbling in all aspects of storytelling.
Marcus continues to get most of his dramatic and comedic insights from real life experience. He lives with Kara, his wife of ten years, and his three young daughters who keep him on his toes when it comes to adapting, improvising, and exploring the comically thin line between fact and fiction.
